I learn so much every week from injuries and patterns I see in others. Experientially we also learn a lot from pain in our own bodies.
For years my SI (sacroiliac) joint has been twangy. It has felt like a pain in the arse! And it often has been. Our SI joints are quite mobile and can be made vulnerable through forward folding. Add in a twist and that weakened position is highlighted. Hoovering is a very difficult position and the reason post op people are discouraged from doing it. I see peoples faces light up whenever I tell them that!
So when people describe twisting to grab something in the car or even on the loo I know where they’ve twanged! I have put it out by doing too much Yin yoga before a run then making the bed which made my back like cooked spaghetti.
But what I have realised lately is I have been walking leading with the same leg and arm. I noticed this on an aqua yoga course where you had to walk in a circle. My same leg/arm took over and it took a lot of concentration to walk with the opposite arm/leg
This happened again on a somatics course recently. We were to observe ourselves walking and how much sway we had in our hips. Mine weren’t moving. Women generally tone that down for fear of appearing catwalkish. Having been in a back brace almost 5 years ago I suddenly realised my body was still holding stiff. Yes I had been complimented on my very straight posture but the sway or swagger wasn’t happening. As bipedal creatures we have two legs to coordinate and hips to hinge in the middle.
So now I’m walking like a hooker the pain has gone away. Who would have thunk it?! Free movement and exploration is just wonderful. It is something I would encourage of anyone. It has made my pain go away to swing and sway. By stopping tucking my tail bone under and letting my lumbar naturally arch I have no pinching.
Here are some good SI joint basics to start with resetting the hips, then all you need to do is practice your catwalk:
